Priniciples of Electromechanical Relay Operation
3.26 Characteristics of Relay Stepping Switches
The principle of operation of the rotary stepping switch is the same as that of the
armature type relay. In these designs, linear motion of the armature is translated through
linkages into rotary motion. Pulsing speed is closely related to design and circuit
conditions. These devices are quite flexible with regard to their pulsing characteristics
and the functions they can perform. Manufacturers’ catalogs usually provide
considerable information on capability. It would be advisable, however, to consult the
manufacturer concerning special applications.
Stepping switches are available with gold plated, base metal and precious metal
contacts. The subject of stepping switches and their application is treated
comprehensively in other publications. Note, however, that the application of different
potentials to adjacent wipers of stepping switches should be avoided. (See Chapter 2
also). Also, do not parallel contacts expecting higher cuffent capability.
